In the City of North Vancouver, as in many cities and towns across BC, motor vehicles regularly obstruct bike lanes and multi-use paths.

Recommendation 24

Modernizing the Motor Vehicle Act

Currently, however, there are no fines for parking in bike lanes, and thus no enforcement against it.

Over the last few years, resident Rob Clinton has photographed vehicles blocking cycling and walking facilities, hoping to motivate lawmakers to do something — like implementing recommendation #24 of Modernizing the Motor Vehicle Act. This would establish fines for obstructing lanes designated for use by vulnerable road users, and ultimately discourage this practice.

In January 2019, North Van resident Mike McIntosh was killed as a result of being ‘doored’ by a careless driver on Esplanade; as a result, this summer the BC Government changed dooring fines through legislative amendment.

It’s time to do the same thing for obstructing bike lanes and paths.
