Grant Program Overview

Following a successful pilot season in 2024, this granting program will again support the development and implementation of attended bike parking programs across the province of British Columbia. The program seeks to provide resources and educational support to communities to facilitate successful implementation of FREE bicycle parking services, with a focus on reducing bike theft and increasing cycling participation. This involves support for program business planning, marketing and promotion, as well as funding for equipment, labor, and associated costs.

Grants ranging from $10K to $50K are to be distributed to municipalities, Indigenous governments, or community organizations interested in promoting cycling. The grant will fund grantees’ provision of bike valet services for the Summer 2025 term; however, by accepting funding, grantees are agreeing to invest financially and socially in their communities’ long-term provision of this vital hybrid service and infrastructure for non-motorized travelers.

In 2025, the program will provide branded marketing resources, social media/promotion training, and support for standardized data collection and analysis. All grantee groups will be required to participate in a monthly virtual gathering, to share challenges and successes, to promote fine-tuning and insights-based revisioning

Grantees will be given reporting tools and templates for consistent and timely collection of their programs’ impacts. BCCC remains committed to grantee success in 2025, and is eager to kick off another season!

FAQ

Many of the below questions were discussed during the Applicant Q&A session held on April 22. To watch the complete video transcript of the meeting and view an AI-generated summary, visit Q_A Session Notes and Video Transcript.

Can grant funding go towards hiring a third party valet service?
Yes, but not for single event valets.

How will funds be disbursed?
Funds will be distributed by EFT.

There isn’t room on the form to adequately describe my project. What should I do?
If you feel you need more space to describe your project, please attach no more than two pages of additional material describing your project and what you feel needs to be added.

Will bike valet materials be affected by tariffs?
While most materials for bike valet can be sourced locally, valet racks are often sourced from a California company, MovedByBikes. As of April 2025 the Canadian government has not tariffed these, but this may be subject to change.

Are grant amounts capped regarding the amounts allocated to labour and materials, or maintaining or expanding funding?
No. Grant asks should however clearly delineate what your project seeks to accomplish and how the grant will build or improve valet capacity.

Expanding a service is “improving or expanding the capacity of an existing valet service”. Does this include investments that don’t directly increase the number of bikes a valet can hold or process (eg. better/taller fencing, higher quality tags, a vehicle for doing events)?
Yes. Applications for these types of investments should highlight how they are needed to improve or strengthen the service, for example highlighting how they will improve operational efficiency or safety.

By when do grant activities need to be completed?
It is our expectation that grant activities should be completed in time for final reporting, in time for the impact of the grant investment to be recorded and reported.

We are worried that data collection might interfere with our valet operations, especially at busy times. Will the platform work with heavy volumes and without internet connection?
Some events or locations may not be compatible with digital survey collection or bike tracking reliant on an internet connection. BCCC understands these infrastructural and operational issues and will work with grantees to ensure that data collection enhances rather than limits operations.
