For 25 years the BC Cycling Coalition has been supported by donors like you who want safer and more accessible cycling and active transportation in BC. With steady and continued effort we have accomplished so much:
Our Advocacy Work
We work with levels of government and agencies to influence changes that make cycling and active transportation safer and more accessible:
We lobbied the B.C. government to pass Bill 23, the first step in enabling cars and trucks to leave a safe passing distance between themselves and vulnerable road users. (Exact distance still TBD- we’re pushing for 1.5m).
Our lobbying helped deliver B.C.’s first e-bike rebate program- so successful that the website crashed with the onslaught of requests. We’re pushing to have it expanded and renewed in 2024.
Worked with ICBC on improved service to cyclists.
BC Safe Routes Now
BC Safe Routes Now is a map-based project that gathers information from communities across BC about their current plans for walking and cycling.
Our goals of the program:
1. Gather information about safe infrastructure in the province to show where plans are in place.
2. Assist planners, funders, and politicians in understanding the most critical needs.
3. Enable communities throughout BC to collaborate and create safer routes to support their climate objectives.
4. Appreciate existing active transportation expansion plans and routes.
5. Advocate for increased provincial and federal funding for active transportation infrastructure across BC.
Bike Sense Education
Bike Sense has been a trusted source of information on bicycles and cycling to British Columbians since 2000. Learning about bikes and how to ride them—at any age, for any reason, in different conditions across British Columbia—is the purpose of Bike Sense.
Bike Sense was written by representatives of cycling advocacy organizations, cycling skills instructors and education providers, and a wide range of transportation planners and related subject matter experts. As with past editions, stakeholder contributions also informed the scope and tone of Bike Sense, and reflect some of the cultural changes occurring in personal mobility, whether for fitness, recreation, sport, transportation, or utility.
The 7th edition of Bike Sense contains passages from the B.C. Motor Vehicle Act, including relevant changes to provincial laws and regulations that have occurred since the last edition. While many words and terms related to cycling are defined here, emphasis has been added for those which the reader may wish to research further.
Kids on Wheels
Did you know Kids on Wheels is the only bike training program in BC for pre-school children between 2 and 6 years old?
Our vision is that every child in British Columbia will know how to ride a bike by age 5, in order to encourage cycling as an integral part of their lives to support community health, wellness, and the environment.
We provide all the equipment — balance bikes and helmets, so all you have to bring is lots of enthusiasm!
Why balance bikes?
Balance bikes are no-pedal bicycles and an important “first step” to cycling. Balance bikes help children gain confidence, improve their self esteem and risk management.
Through balance bikes kids discover balance and steering in their own time and comfort zone. The experience gained through balance bikes leads to an easy transition to a pedal bike, often without the need for training wheels.
BikeSense Podcast
Hosted by BCCC’s Board Chair, Peter Ladner, in this podcast, Peter chats with top supporters and experts from all over BC about climate change, getting around using bikes and walking, and the thrilling experiences and obstacles of cycling throughout the province.
Over 6 episodes, we’ve covered topics ranging from biking the spectacular trails in the Pacific Rim, to the importance of establishing safe school routes, to the realities of being a bikes-only family in Whistler.
Join us in engaging conversations with folks passionate about building safer, more accessible cycling communities throughout BC!
But our work is far from over. Throughout the year BCCC runs campaigns to promote and support specific activities - such as our push for Safe Passing Legislation, or funding drives to support our Kids on Wheels Road Safety and Education Programs.
