BCCC Provincial Active Transportation Inventory Project - Connecting Communities

The BC Cycling Coalition (BCCC) is partnering with SFU to increase safe, comfortable cycling infrastructure across the province.

The Active Transportation Inventory Project (ATIP) is a map-based inventory of bicycle and pedestrian related transportation plans published by municipalities and community action groups across BC.

The inventory will:

  1. Assemble data on safe infrastructure across the province to illustrate where plans exist.

  2. Help planners, funders, and politicians understand what is most urgently needed.

  3. Empower communities around BC to work together to build more safe routes to meet their climate goals.

  4. Celebrate the active transportation expansion plans and routes that already exist

  5. Help to make the case for more provincial and federal funding for AT infrastructure throughout BC

Local planners will be encouraged to input and update their active transportation plan details to keep inventory current and useful. The beta version of the tool is available online, and the data is also open for download. Citizens, planners, and others are encouraged to contribute to the data by contacting CHATR Lab. This project will collect data from communities across BC on their current state in multi-modal planning, focussing on rural areas and small towns.

“We are very excited to work with SFU’s Cities, Health & Active Transportation Research (CHATR) Lab to spread the word about this tool and use it to increase local input and help local advocates learn from each other.” Mike Koski, BCCC Exceutive Director

The CHATR Lab is led by Faculty of Health Sciences professor Meghan Winters and supported by the Public Health Agency of Canada.

“Increased cycling has so many benefits, including more affordable transportation options, healthier, quieter and happier communities, reduced car congestion, cleaner air and GHG reductions.” Meghan Winters, CHATR Labs

The SFU database combines OpenStreetMap with the Canadian Bikeway Comfort and Safety (Can-BICS) classification to reveal high comfort, medium comfort and low comfort routes in each municipality.
