2024 Bike Valet Pilot Report

Celebrating a successful first season

The BC Cycling Coalition (BCCC) is proud to announce the success of the 2024 Bike Valet Incubator program, which expanded secure bike parking across the province, reducing car trips and encouraging active transportation. With support from the BC Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure, the program funded the creation and expansion of 11 bike valets in communities from Vancouver Island to the Interior, parking over 30,000 bikes in a single season.

  • Key findings show that the availability of bike parking staffed by valets significantly contributes to shifting transportation habits, with a reported 35% mode shift from cars to bicycles. In the Summer of 2024, this resulted in an estimated reduction of 100,000 vehicle kilometers traveled and 19 tonnes of CO₂ emissions. The program also demonstrated strong community engagement, with all grantees committed to continuing their bike valet operations beyond the grant period.

The initiative highlights the power of bike valet services in making cycling a more viable and secure transportation option, in many kinds of communities across the province. With additional investment in 2025, BCCC will extend this impact even further, alongside partners seeking to develop fixed location and event valets in their communities.

The 2025 Program will also focus on standardizing data collection, additional planning and marketing tools to support bike valet services, and enhanced collaboration between valet operators.

For more information on the program’s impact and future opportunities, scroll down on our 2025 Bike Valet Parking page and sign up for updates as they become available.

Active Campaigns

We’re updating Bike Sense and we want to hear from you!

Bike Sense, the authoritative guide to bicycling in British Columbia, is getting a make-over. We’ve got legal experts updating it to reflect BC’s new safe passing distance legislation, the ins and outs of operating e-bikes and e-scooters, and more.

We’re thinking a lot about the many uses and users of Bike Sense’s content, and everyone on the project team agrees that it’s time we move beyond a printed booklet and a collection of web pages.

Are there subsections of Bike Sense that should be turned into a series of bike safety posters for primary school classrooms?

Does Worksafe BC need a custom, heavily visual training module for its Doordash, Skip the Dishes, and Uber Eats e-bike deliverists?

We’re sure there’s much more possibility where these came from and we’re looking for focus group participants from any of the following groups:

  • Bus drivers

  • Uber/Lyft drivers

  • Food deliverists

  • Primary school teachers

  • ICBC claims team members

  • Parents who regularly bike with their kids

  • Brand-new cyclists

… but we’re open to other kinds of users, too. Express your interest in shaping the future of Bike Sense!

Announcements

Kids On Wheels is expanding - Make sure it’s available in your community!

The Kids On Wheels team is busy connecting with new community centres in East and South Vancouver and beyond, filling up our schedule of both parent and toddler, and kids-only preschool camps for the Summer of 2025.

Want to see this popular program offered at your community centre or daycare this summer? We want to hear from you!

The KOW team is also open to scheduling bike safety and fun 1-day events at schools and daycares during the months of April and May, to help get kids ready for Spring Go By Bike Week, May 31st-June 6th. Get in touch here.

HUB expands e-bike education program outside of Metro Vancouver

HUB Cycling is offering funding to community organizations who wish to provide e-bike education programs in 2025. We are looking for organizations outside of Metro Vancouver who would like to host e-bike education programs in their community, but require funding and/or other resources (such as curriculum and handouts). By providing e-bike education, your organization can increase e-bike safety and confidence within your community, promote sustainable transportation, and improve community health!

Interested? Please email Lisa at ebikeproposal@bikehub.ca for more information.
