Kids on Wheels Moves Forward

BCCC hands off bike skills course for pre-schoolers to HUB Cycling

After over a decade providing introductory bike education to preschool aged children across Metro Vancouver, the BC Cycling Coalition is bidding farewell to its Kids on Wheels program.

Beginning with the delivery of half-day weekend winter cycling camps, HUB Cycling will take over operation and delivery of all Kids on Wheels programming.

“The only sad thing about saying goodbye to Kids on Wheels is not being able to see the thrill on the faces of little ones riding bikes for the very first time,” said Melanie Hyde, a Board member with the BC Cycling Coalition and a long-time Kids on Wheels program volunteer.

“Cycling education is still a big part of our mission, but HUB has built an unmatched capacity to run programs on the ground in communities, and we’re so happy they can add this to their existing programs for youth and adults,” said Hyde.

Kids on Wheels was started by Maya Goldstein, a Vancouver mother of two and cycling advocate, who brought the program to the BC Cycling Coalition in 2014. Consisting of weekend and week-long summer courses and camps at community centres, daycare programs, and ‘pop-up’ courses at local events, Kids on Wheels has helped thousands of children aged 2-6 learn to ride bicycles, and understand the role of bikes as active modes within the larger world of transportation.
