Planning Your Ride
Whether you’re a beginner or experienced rider, plan ahead to set yourself up for success.
Be Roadworthy
Give your bike an ‘ABC inspection’ before hitting the road or trail:
AIR: Tires should be inflated to the recommended air pressure for greatest efficiency and to minimize risk of punctures. Also, ensure your wheel hub quick releases or bolts are tight.
BRAKES: Squeeze the front and back brakes—they should apply firmly and smoothly, and the levers shouldn’t touch your grip.
CHAIN: Ensure your chain is installed around the front and back sprockets and is lightly lubricated.
Know Where You’re Going
Review your intended route in advance:
Know street names and where bicycle facilities begin and end.
You can often find official bike route maps on the website of your local or regional government, or the transit authority.
Check out popular bike routes sites or apps with cycling navigation and route-planning tools, such as Bikemap, Google Maps, Komoot, and Strava.
Know the Law
Under provincial law in B.C., a bicycle operator has the same rights and obligations as a motor vehicle operator, and must operate with due care, attention, and reasonable consideration for other road users. Following the rules of the road can also reduce crash risk.

Be Prepared
For cycling trips outside your local neighbourhood, carry a few basic essentials just in case you need to stop, fuel up, fix your bike, or deal with a minor scrape:
Bike lock and key
Patch kit (or spare inner tube) and multi-tool
Hand pump
Clean rag
Extra layer of clothing or jacket
Water and/or snacks
Bandaid and antiseptic wipes
