On Provincial Active Transportation Funding & Community Consultation, Nelson-style
At the end of June, the Province of BC’s Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure announced its Active Transportation grants, which we discussed in a recent blog post.
The grants included over $400,000 for a new, dedicated bike route in Nelson in the East Kootenay region of the province. But that’s not what the money will now be used.
The decision in Nelson to ‘course correct’ says a lot — not just about about both how the province is planning and investing in active transportation, but also how local governments may be following their lead in terms of investing both dollars and political capital in cycling projects.
On July 7th, BCCC Executive Director Colin Stein spoke to Keith Wiley of Eco-Centric Environment Radio about the funding announcement, about the Nelson bike lane project, and what British Columbians should be asking for from their leaders. You can listen that discussion below:
Eco-Centric airs weekly on Kootenay Co-op Radio (93.5 FM in Nelson).
