Community Spotlight: Nanaimo and Mid-Island

Thrills and Skills Cycling is a dynamic, energetic company that was created to bring the amazing sport of cycling to better many lives abroad. Their mission is to guide, instruct, and coach riders of all ages and abilities to help them discover the true joys and freedoms of riding a bicycle. With strong roots in the mid-Island community, Thrills and Skills offers an integrated coaching and learning experience while having fun and social interaction.

Stephen Pilcher, owner and head coach, is passionate about youth cycling. With coaching experience and training in safety, cycling skills and mountain biking he has adapted a host of programs to cater to every level of young rider from beginner to advanced. Stephen has been operating the IRide after school programs for 5 years with great success. He also co-operated a pilot program of the Cycling BC HopOn (formerly iRide) in-school program in 2020 which was well received. There are plans in the works to organize and expand the in-school program further in 2024.

But, Pilcher can’t do it without help. Stephen’s plan is to recuit the youth who have benefited from his program to become coaches and mentors in order to keep the program going. The BCCC celebrates community members like Stephen who are committed to furthering th safety and accessibility of cycling for all ages and abilities.
