Using Public Transit

You can go farther and faster when you use a bicycle in combination with public transit.

Buses

  • Most public buses in BC are equipped with front bicycle racks; bicycles travel free with a passenger fare.

  • E-bikes are permitted on bus bike racks if they weigh less than 25 kg (55 lbs); batteries must usually be removed.

  • Local transit companies often provide tips on using bicycle racks, and how to prepare and load your bike.

  • Some highway coach lines allow bicycles and may require bikes to be packed in boxes or bike bags.

For Metro Vancouver transit info, visit the TransLink website.

Commuter Rail & SkyTrain

  • In Metro Vancouver, bicycles are allowed on SkyTrain and WestCoast Express at no extra charge, subject to space availability and some conditions.

  • Bicycles are not allowed on escalators and must be carried on stairs or transported by elevator.

  • Most SkyTrain stations have bike racks and bike lockers, and some have card-operated bike parkades.

Trains

  • Most passenger trains allow bicycles on board; many have bike racks, though some may require bicycles to be packed in boxes or bike bags.

  • Via Rail and Amtrak charge a fee; racks can often be reserved in advance.
