Conversations about these topics (and many more) will be happening at this year's AT Summit in Victoria, Oct 28-30—and registration is now open.

This year’s theme Moving from Good to Great is about how we push talk into walk—in provincial and local policies, laws, regulations, and investments. That’s what our role is, and what the Summit is all about.

We’ll be talking about the role of advocates. We’ll be hearing about our progress towards road safety goals (and where the trend lines are pointing). And we’re ready for conversations about how active travel fits in the new world order, including strategies for and investments in education, jobs, tourism and trade.

The Summit is your chance to have all sorts of tough, productive, and inspired discussions about what good to great looks like with AT leaders from across B.C., and what we need to do to get there.

With our partners Capital Bike, it's an honour to be able to convene the conversation. We'll set the stage, provide some food and water, and a little outside air to keep the the ideas fresh and flowing.

Melissa Bruntlett is a Canadian-born cycling advocate, author, and communications consultant based in Delft, the Netherlands, and co-author of Building the Cycling City and Curbing Traffic. In this episode, Melissa joins Peter to talk about her latest book, Women Changing Cities: Global Stories of Urban Transformation, what it takes to build livable, human-scaled cities, and why the leaders driving that change are so often women. She reflects on her recent return to Vancouver after six years away, what's changed (and stalled) in the city's cycling network, and how Alberta and Ontario's moves to rip out bike lanes fit into a broader pattern of politicized backlash against active transportation.

City of Coquitlam wins ITE Complete Street of the Year Award for Guildford Way

The Guildford Way Complete Street project in Coquitlam keeps stacking up the accolades.

Last month, ITE International awarded the municipality’s transportation team with the Complete Street of the Year award for the redesign, which has resulted in a 99.4% reduction in critical and high-risk interactions since the first phase opened in 2023.

Guildford Way connects about 24,000 residents to schools, parks, and jobs, as well as the Lafarge Lake–Douglas SkyTrain Station; the Guildford project boasts the first protected intersections in the Tri-Cities region, delivering safer, higher-quality travel options for all users—people walking, rolling, cycling, taking transit or driving.

What’s New in AT?

• East meets West in Courtenay-Comox—Earlier this summer and just in time for Canada Day, the City of Courtenay celebrated the opening of the new 6th Street Bridge, an active transportation project that provides a safe and accessible connection across the Courtenay River for people walking, cycling and rolling. In addition to improving safety and strengthening connections between neighbourhoods, businesses and community spaces, the project came in three months ahead of schedule and $400,000 under budget (a double-double?). • Bike-themed film coming to Victoria — A Simple Machine is an independent feature film from Portland-based director and writer Mark Alan Hoffman, who recently screened the film over two days in Vancouver. Starring Richard Blackmon in a breakout lead role, the film centres on Nick Allander, a recent college grad trying to figure out his life’s direction during the late stages of the pandemic. A Simple Machine will screen at the Victoria Conference Centre at 7pm on Wed, Oct 28th as part of the 2026 AT Summit. Tickets are $20 and available to the public through the BCCC website.
